Community and Social Programs

Marginalized racial and religious groups in Peel Region have the lowest social-economic status among Peel Region population. Given the ways that the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted low-income and racialized people especially in the Region of Peel, Bramalea Islamic Cultural Centre would like to play a pivotal role in elevating socio-economic status of people in need and building a community for life where everyone enjoys a sense of belonging and has access to the opportunities needed to thrive in each stage of their lives.

Here is a list of programs and activities we do to improve social and economic opportunities for marginalized population groups in the Region of Peel. The purpose of these programs and activities is to remove some of barriers that keep vulnerable families from the resources and supports necessary to thrive. They will help them to participate in the society, prosper, and reach their full potential.

1. Educational Support program that increases vulnerable students access, success, and completion

Listed below include some of activities to increase high school graduation rate and education beyond high school; remove barriers to educational attainment; and raise the science, technology, engineering, and mathematic abilities of underprivileged students:

  • Students Mentorship Activities
  • Homework Help & Tutoring Activities
  • Introducing STEM courses to deprived students at an early age
2. Workforce Readiness Program to increase income and employment for youth, unemployed and ethnic or racial groups and enhance employment opportunities

Listed below include some of activities to enhance employment opportunities; and provide occupation-specific training and supportive services in high-growth industries and sectors to single parents with low income especially women, youth, unemployed and ethnic or racial groups so that so that they can be more productive contributors to the society:

  1. Classes and seminars on self-assessment and career exploration, resume writing, interviewing techniques, dressing for success, networking, and entrepreneurship.
  2. Computer literary courses and training to teach vulnerable people a range of software and computer skills that help them overcome barriers to employment and develop a broad range of computer/software skills and knowledge to participate in the current and future labour market.
3. Family and Social Support program to increase social connections and supports

Listed below include some of activities to help our community members to create beneficial relationships and networks in a community. People with greater social support, less isolation, and greater interpersonal trust live longer and healthier lives than those who are socially isolated:

  • Physical activities for older adults to promote social interactions, regular attendance, and community involvement among older adults
  • Extracurricular activities for social engagement to offer social, art, or physical activities for school-aged youth outside of the school day
  • Intergenerational mentoring activities to establish relationships between older adults and children or adolescents
  • Providing critical supports such as distribution of staple goods to vulnerable population to meet their basic needs especially during a pandemic
  • Strengthening families’ bonds activities to increase family strengths and resilience and reduce risk factors for problem behaviors in high-risk children, including behavioral, emotional, academic, and social problems
  • Activities designed to the physical, psychological, social, and economic development of girls and women.
